Make your feelings known within the business you work for, that you rely on and relies on you. It’s hellishly difficult to make good decisions on workplace strategy as well as if, where and how much office space you need but there are people who can help you make good decisions – I’m one of them. If you want the outcome you want, be part of the debate. Hybrid working is a system of working that is in the interests of the business and the people who form that business – for a common goal – the success of the business. Change has to be led by the people who deliver the culture and results of a business, the engine room, and I believe employers want to hear it and act on it, because they understand people are important. If you are not telling your employer the style of working that will get the best out of you then accept someone else’s decisions on what your working life will be. So, here’s my definition of Hybrid working. As a society as individuals as organisations, friendship groups, families, teams, colleagues. Things have changed a lot….no no things haven’t changed a lot actually, but WE have changed a lot and things need to change because of that. Does it to you? As we reflect on what has happened to us all over the last two years we are now realising the foolishness and inefficiency of what we accepted as ‘the right way to do things’. However, it doesn’t feel natural anymore. There is a place of work, and you shall attend said place of work in order to fulfil the work – simple, established, traditional, proper, and how it has always been, a natural elegance to the arrangement. The problem we have is that we need a meaningful and practical definition of hybrid working– you don’t say! But by who (or whom?) We have trundled along for centuries with the status quo of the employer dictating the rules of the game. It’s a bit like being in a shop where you don’t know if you are in a queue or not, you want to be in the queue but are the people in front of you just browsing or in the queue? Argh – you can’t simply step forward in case you compromise the implied etiquette and are shamed for being bold, uncouth – worse still, taking liberties!! So, there’s this awkward, let’s find a tacit understanding situation, where nobody confronts or upsets each other until someone else works out what we should do – how British. The disadvantage of Hybrid working is that nobody has nailed down what it really means as far as working is concerned. I raise the question because Hybrid means a bit of two things mixed together, doesn’t it? However, the objective of hybridisation (just made that word up btw – love it though) is that you get the good bits of two things and merge them into something amazing, improved at least. A bit of what I want and a bit of what my Boss or the company I work for wants. So, it’s a bit of staying at home and a bit of going to the office. The advantages and disadvantages of hybrid working – what a question! At face value an obvious advantage is that it’s better than the previous way of working where you fall out of bed to get an early train into a city somewhere.
